Have you been suffering from neck pain that won’t go away? Are you unable to turn your head in one direction due to tight neck muscles? Is your neck pain chronic and taking a toll on your quality of life?
If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, then you are most likely suffering from chronic neck pain due to tight muscles. Despite being a common condition, chronic neck pain is nonetheless painful and debilitating at times. Neck pain will affect every aspect of your life, whether you are working out in the gym or simply trying to get a good night’s sleep.
However, before you try addressing the pain through treatments such as medication, several neck pain remedies are safer and more effective. Take a look at the following tips for alleviating your neck pain, and if you still aren’t happy with the results, then you can consult a physiotherapist for expert help.
Sometimes, addressing your neck pain can be as easy as changing the way you sleep. For an optimal night’s sleep that will leave your neck feeling pain-free in the morning, you should avoid sleeping with too many pillows, since using excessive pillows can cause the muscles in your neck to tighten up.
Additionally, you should try not to sleep on your stomach, as your head will be forced to lay in one direction or the other. The awkward angle can cause your neck muscles to tense up and stiffen throughout the night.
Ideally, you should be sleeping either on your back or on your side, with one pillow under your neck and head, keeping them level. If you can maintain a relatively even position all night where your spine will be aligned and your head will not be propped up too high, then you should notice your neck pain slowly dissipating.
Poor posture is one of the most common neck pain causes, but it typically doesn’t cross people’s minds as a contributing factor. This is because the way you sit or stand doesn’t involve your neck, but if you are constantly hunching over a computer at work or standing with your shoulders forward, your neck muscles will take the brunt.
Over time, poor posture can make all of your muscles rigid and inflexible. However, if you constantly remind yourself to stand and sit up straight, then you should start recognizing a major difference in your overall health, including your neck pain.
Although changing your sleeping position and being mindful of your posture will go a long way in relieving neck pain, there are other things you could do to improve the motion in your shoulders and neck. For one, there are many neck pain exercises and stretches that can be done multiple times a day to alleviate your discomfort.
An example of an easy exercise you can do is called a neck extension, where you will bring your head up and tilt it back as far as you can go. You should hold this position for a few seconds, and then slowly bring your head back down. By doing this simple movement a few times each day, you will loosen up your neck muscles and slowly feel the pain dissipate.
If you’ve tried these different tips but are still suffering from chronic neck pain, then it may be time to meet with a physiotherapist. After all, a certified medical professional trained in the musculoskeletal system will be able to pinpoint the source of your neck pain, helping you address it quickly and safely.
